September 12-Principal Message

What a wonderful start to the 2025-2026 school year! It’s been such a joy to see our students settling into routines, building connections, and diving into learning with enthusiasm. The energy in our classrooms and hallways has been inspiring, and we’re excited for all the growth and adventures ahead.

We have a few quick updates and reminders for our CJM community.

Meet the Teacher Night

We warmly invite you to join us for Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday, September 25, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM.

This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher, explore the classroom environment, and learn more about what’s ahead this school year. We look forward to seeing you there!

Monday, Sept 29-No School

Please note that there will be no school on Monday, September 29, as our teachers will be participating in a professional learning day.

Tuesday, Sept 30-No School

The Government of Canada has proclaimed Sept. 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. September 30 will be a non-operational day to commemorate truth and reconciliation across the Calgary Board of Education. This means there will be no classes and schools will be closed for the day. We also invite students to wear orange shirts or clothing. This annual date of the event signifies the time of year when Indigenous children were historically taken from their homes to residential schools.

NEW School Hours

We would like to inform you that our instructional hours have been adjusted. Please take note of the following changes:

Start Time: Classes begin at 9:05 AM. Students may arrive starting at 8:50 AM, when staff supervision is available. For safety reasons, we kindly ask that children are not dropped off before 8:50 AM.

Lunch Break (Grades 1–6): Lunch will take place from 12:05 PM to 12:49 PM.

Monday-Thursday Dismissal Time: The school day ends at 3:47 PM

Friday Dismissal Time: The school day ends at 1:07 PM

Thank you for your attention and support in helping us maintain a safe and smooth school day for all students.

IMPORANT REMINDER: Action required-MyCBE

Schools have a variety of forms that parents / legal guardians are required to complete or review and update, some of which are paper and others online. In CBE, the forms in an online format (SchoolEngage) are:

Demographic Verification - 2025-26 – This form includes your child’s personal information as well as parent / legal guardian contact information.

Citizenship Information Update - 2025-26 – This form becomes available if you change your child’s citizenship information on the Demographic Verification form.

Annual Authorization - 2025-26 – Combines the following forms:

School District Use of Personal Information - explains how CBE uses personal information in providing education services.

Consent for CBE Use of Student Information – provides an option to grant / not grant consent for additional use of student information by school/district and third parties.

Consent for Use of Student Information by News Media and Outside Groups (Third Party) - provides an option to grant / not grant consent for additional use of student information by outside groups and third parties

SchoolEngage is one of the applications found in your MyCBE account. This is the same account that you use to pay fees, view academic information, book school conferences, etc.

CBE Transportation and School Parking

  1. This is reminder that we need to keep the parking spots open and available all day in the no park zone on the street at the front of the school.
  2. IMPORTANT: If you will be taking your child home after school and they will NOT be riding the bus we are asking you to:
    1. Inform the office (not classroom teacher)
    2. Pick up your child and walk them to the bus line ups and ask the Bus Teacher Supervisor to mark them as “not taking the bus” on the bus attendance sheet.
This will help us to complete attendance and to send the busses on their way quickly.
  3. If you have not registered for busing, please register as soon as possible. To complete the registration process, please log into your MyCBE account, scroll down to the Fees, Waivers and Service Registration box, and then click on Transportation Forms 2025/2026. Due to the number of students supported by CBE transportation, there may be a significant delay between the day the registration is submitted and when students are eligible to ride the bus.
  4. Our goal is student safety first. Thank you for your help and support to ensure this is our priority.

Crosswalk Safety

Our Student Crosswalk Patrollers will begin their duties shortly after completing their training. Please help us continue fostering a safe environment by using the designated crosswalks during drop-off and pick-up times. It sets a great example for our students and helps ensure everyone’s safety.

We encourage all families to talk with their children about safe street-crossing practices:

·         Always use the crosswalk

·         Look both ways before crossing

·         Wait for the patroller’s signal

·         Avoid distractions like phones or headphones

Together, we can build a culture of safety and respect around our school. Thanks for being part of it!

Snacks, Food and Treats

We always appreciate parent and student generosity. Spreading kindness is always our goal. We have made changes to our processes in regards to food and gifts. We are asking parents not to send treats, food or class count items with your child to school for teachers to distribute to other students. We reassure you that we celebrate all children everyday at our school in a variety of ways during the school year. If your child comes with a class count of items to hand out we apologize ahead of time but we will be sending the items home with your child at the end of the day. Thank you for your understanding and support with this new process.

Walking Trip Letter

The CBE values the educational benefit of field trips. Field trips close to our school can complement classroom learning by giving students opportunities to explore the community around their school.

Please be advised the process for trips within walking distance of the school has been simplified, excluding restricted activities. As parents/guardians, you will no longer need to fill out a consent form for your child to go on a class trip that is walking distance from the school, e.g. to a local park.  Appropriate walking distance will be determined by the Principal and may vary, depending on the age of the students.

Please see attached the annual CJM Walking Trip Letter.

Student Attendance

If your child is away due to illness, family event, medical, etc. please leave a message on the attendance line. 403-777-6700 ext.1. If you are going on an extended absence please email chiefjusticemilvainschool@cbe.ab.ca and inform us of your plans. All extended absences will require a form and a meeting with the principal is required before your departure. Please contact the school if you have further questions.

Come Volunteer with Us

Certain activities or field trips would not be possible without the active participation of our volunteers. We need volunteers!

As a CBE volunteer, you are placed in a position of trust with students, staff or property.  All adult volunteers require a valid security clearance - no exceptions.

Please visit the CBE website to learn more about becoming a volunteer. If you have further questions please contact the school.
